computers

You know how some people say kids today just have a knack for computers? Those people are wrong. I'd venture to say that the understanding of computers only gets worse with time. As computers become black boxes that self destruct upon entry and software hides behind the ubiquitous label of proprietary, the only thing kids understand is how to consume the media they're fed. I've found it extremely rare to meet a kid who thinks of a computer as a tool they can use for creation.

The Raspberry Pi and other open source computers and microcontrollers are the only saving grace. I've taught workshops on Raspberry Pi and Arduino, and a variety of large scale projects that used both, along with Gemmas, Jetsons, Microbits, and a handful of lesser known microcontrollers.
